Westbury Conservatories
 
Over the years we have meticulously developed and formulated our specifications. We aim to design and manufacture doors and windows in our workshop that are not only pleasing to the eye, but also long lasting and require little maintenance. This is a guide to how we achieve this.

01. Timber

Our joinery has been installed throughout the UK and Europe and consequently is subject to a wide variety of weather conditions with dramatic temperature changes and often high humidity.

To aid stability we use clear laminated redwood. Often people's perception is that laminated timber is a second rate product and made to use all the offcuts. Fact is, it is a prime timber with no knotts and more stable than any other durable timber and takes paint extremely well.

Hardwood will leave a slight difference to the paint finish than that of redwood due to the grain. Westbury use sapele as a first choice hardwood.

For internal doors that are painted, tulipwood/redwood is our preferred choice with the use of medium density fibre board (MDF) for panels. When doors are required in a natural finish we will work from oak, maple, cherry etc.

Our entire timber comes from renewable forests, and for your assurance, building policy documents confirming this can be provided upon request.

02. Sections and mouldings
Our section drawings show the standard range of mouldings, we also have a large number of other profiles available or we will grind cutters to achieve the desired profile. Our moulded sections keep their sharp edges to give depth rather than being rounded off.

03. Glass and glazing
Our traditional single glazed doors and windows have the glass siliconed into place for added security reasons, ready for putty on site. 4mm float or toughened (safety glass) is recommended which comes in the form of patterned or etched.

Double-glazing has a standard 12mm cavity produced by using a white spacer bar. The spacer bar is also available in bronze or silver.

Special orders to accommodate larger cavities and triple glazing can be arranged.

Every door and window is factory glazed in a controlled environment using a dry drainage system, security tape is fixed to the casement with a second tape adhered to the beads which are secured with stainless steel pins. There are no unsightly drainage beads as we have our own unique system to give a true traditional look.

Plant on glazing bars are applied as above.

Westbury offer a wide range of glass.

4mm & 6mm float/Annealed glass is glass which, immediately after it has solidified the required form, while still at a high temperature, is slowly cooled. 4mm & 6mm toughened glass is produced by heating annealed glass to approximately 620ºC at which point it begins to soften. The surfaces of this heated glass are then cooled rapidly. The bending strength is increased by up to 5 times that of annealed glass. When broken, toughened glass fractures into small pieces (called dice). 6.4mm laminated two sheets of annealed glass sandwich together with a polyvinylbutyral interlayer. It is no stronger than the glass it is made from and cracks as easily. However, when laminated glass breaks, the glass fragments tend to adhere to the interlayer material.

Privacy/decorative glass We offer a large range of etched and textured glass. Please ask for details.

Low-E (low emissive) High quality clear glass with a specially formulated pyrolitic, soft low emissivity coating applied to one surface during glass manufacture. Allowing solar gain but reflecting heat back into the building. (Only available with double-glazing).

Argon gas filled cavity This involves replacing the air in the cavity by injecting an inert gas called Argon. Argon is denser than air, making it a poorer conductor thus ensuring less heat loss. This can be a requirement for building control on large glazed areas. Calculation charts for U values can be supplied on request.

04. Joinery
All of our doors and windows are manufactured using a combination of modern and traditional joinery techniques giving us the best possible products that will last the test of time in durability and looks. Investment in CNC machines has given us the opportunity to make a better product at cost effective prices.

All doors and windows are fully fitted in the factory, i.e. hung in their frames, locks cut in and fitted. Doors are assembled with double stub tenons into a stub mortise.

 
05. Preservation
Preservation to all redwood external products is carried out after assembly. Unlike solvent vacuum systems Sadolin WB 100 is water-borne and will not contribute to atmospheric pollution by production of low-level ozone. If the timber should crack or nails/screws create areas where moisture can ingress, the timber will be better protected by borate containing preservatives than preservatives that only give an envelope of protection against rot, insect and fungicidal attack. The NHBC requirement is 30 years service life on joinery. This is met by using boron containing preservative systems such as Sadolin WB 100.

All end grain is treated with end grain sealer.

06 Painting and decoration
We only recommend acrylic (water-borne) paints and stains. Before each product leaves our factory we apply 2 coats, the first (base) coat sets very hard giving us a better surface to de nib (sand), the second coat will give a semi-finish and will preserve the joinery until site painting can take place.

One site coat meets manufacturers recommendations.

Our standard colour is white and will be semi-matt in appearance when finished.

Stains can also be used. We will recommend or supply topcoat as requested.

07. Ironmongery and security
All French doors are fitted as standard with high-quality multi point locks approved by the Master Locksmith Association and the British Board of Agrément. (Will meet insurance criteria.) Upon locking, a bolt is shot top and bottom into the frame, as well as three separate bolts into the slave door. This is locked using an anti drill Euro-cylinder, which can be supplied Key-alike if more than one doorset is ordered.

The slave door is secured by bolts top and bottom, and these are mounted in the rebate so not seen until the doors are opened.

Doors are hung on standard butt hinges or projection hinges. These are available with hinge bolts on request.

A Victorian-style solid brass scroll handle with a narrow back plate is fitted unless other wise stated as standard, along with cabin hooks, however other styles and finishes are available.

Casements are hung on friction hinges, and can be side or top hung (please note side hung sashes are subject to size and weight constraints). These feature an espagnolette locking system, and come with lockable brass-coloured handles.

Sliding box-sash windows are operated with traditional cord weights and pulleys if single glazed, or with spring balances when double-glazed.

08. Weather gaskets

For doors and casement windows we use the 'Schlegel aquamac 21' weather seal as our standard draft excluder.

To the bottom of the doors we incorporate a flapped water/draft strip which does not get walked on and ruptured or defuncked.

Siding sashes have a durable parting bead with brush to maintain a constant high level of protection against the elements. The protection is completed by using a brush seal with 6.5mm pile.

09. Maintenance
All of Westbury's products are thoroughly checked at the factory before delivery to ensure there are no scratches on the glass or ironmongery, so it is important that great care is taken on site. Westbury supplies an on site handling, storage, fixing and after care maintenance file with all orders.

10. Thermal
Approved document L is concerned with the conservation of fuel and power. This is part of the government's overall strategy to reduce energy usage and CO2 emissions.

As far as windows and doors are concerned, this is mainly to reduce the amount of heat loss from the building through the window.

With exception of single glazing, our doors/windows comply with document L.

Timber windows will always out perform UPVC and aluminium windows as timber is a natural insulator.
